Hiding on the Backstreets of Split

One of the things I really like about walking around cities in Europe is the streets and buildings bring you back in time. No place is this more evident than in old town Split where cars are neither allowed or would fit down these streets.

Split Croatia

I really didn't know much about Split before going there other than it's on the water and that's pretty much all it takes for me to decide that a place is worth visiting. Then to get there and find out that there were Roman buildings dating back to 300 AD made it even more incredible and beautiful. Split is across the Adriatic from Italy and was the site of Diocletian's Palace.  It still makes up the center part of the city and people live and work throughout it.

More to come about Split later!

Leaving the EU

So we went to Split Croatia this weekend which was our first time out of the EU which meant one thing, passport control at the border.  Kind of lame, it's nice to go through countries like they are states back in the US but it was well worth it when you get views like the ones from below with lunch.  Much more on Split and the Adriatic coast later.

Gellert Hill

The hill to the right is called Gellert Hill.  It was named after a priest in the middle ages who was trying to convert pagans who got stuck in a barrel full of nails and rolled to his death in the Danube for his efforts. I guess they felt bad for him so the named the hill after him, no hard feelings, right?  Any way it is just across the river from us and it's a nice walk up to the top with some great views of the city.

Any Ideas?

I walk by this sign just about everyday since it is on my way back from the central market and have no clue what it means. I've been going with don't hold hands with people wearing strange hats and it's worked for me so far. Come to think of it, the hat does look a little like Freddy Krueger's from Nightmare on Elm Street.

Slovakia

So this weekend we entered Slovakia and apparently Hungary is not the only one with confusing signs. Looking at it now I can see it's speed limits for cars and trucks in and out of cities and  I guess the bottom two are for big roads in and out of cities but when you're on the move it is an awful lot of information to take in. I think the easiest thing is to just do what everyone else is doing!
