I really didn't know much about Split before going there other than it's on the water and that's pretty much all it takes for me to decide that a place is worth visiting. Then to get there and find out that there were Roman buildings dating back to 300 AD made it even more incredible and beautiful. Split is across the Adriatic from Italy and was the site of Diocletian's Palace. It still makes up the center part of the city and people live and work throughout it.
